Well, I have finally, for now, settled on a speedier, neater-looking design for doll babies. Its structure is similar to the previous crocheted-in-the-round version – made in pieces, then stuffed and sewn together.

Here are the torso and limbs of the doll baby, strung onto a knitting needle so it shouldn't unravel.
